FABRICATE
From Production to Expression
A workshop on digital design methods & production technique by using Rhinoceros
13-29 October 2008
Instructors:
Ting-Ting Zhang & William Tan
1) To introduce digital generative design and production methodology to its participants.
2) To exploring the possibilities and capacity of generative design, CNC fabrication and the coupling of these two technologies.
3) Students will be ‘designing through making’ – a methodology that focuses on the expression of form, its function and its structural composition all at once.

Introduction
The mobius has a simple organic and fluid form, carving out unique interior spaces through a continuous plane flowing from floor to wall to ceiling. Due to the changes in the flow of the plane, the mobius is able to create interior spaces which possess interesting negative spaces yet, looking beautifully as a form still. This concept of continuity was brought along side during the design of framing for the form as well.
A translucent material is chosen over an opaque one as it gives the fluid form a certain level of complexity and depth which draws more attention to the curvature of the form and structure, than one that only shows a surface and blocks out the rest of mobius. The translucency of the material also allows us to play with light and shadow in the interior.
Splitting the jobs among group members helped release the heavy workload of the project. Each were assigned to different job scopes, for example, cadding plans and elevations from rhino files, rendering with v-ray, getting the model pieces cut at the workshop etc. Working in pairs also helped us when we needed consultation and advice.
